*VAN SLYKE NAMED CALIFORNIA LEAGUE ALL-STAR*
*BECOMES FIRST MEMBER OF 20/40/100 CLUB*

Inland Empire 66ers right fielder Scott Van Slyke was named to the 2009 California League post season All-Star Team, the league announced Tuesday.

Van Slyke, selected as a designated hitter, is the lone 66ers representative on the team, which was selected by the league’s coaching staffs and broadcasters. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season with Inland Empire in 2009. He is hitting .297 with 23 home runs and 100 RBIs while playing a team-high 130 games. His 42 doubles are tied for third in the league, he is fourth in the circuit in RBIs and tied for third with 69 extra-base hits.

Van Slyke, from Ladue, Mo., reached 100 RBIs with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth of Wednesday’s game to become the first player in franchise history to record at least 20 home runs, 40 doubles, and 100 RBIs in a single season. He is only the third player in team history with 40 doubles in a season and his next double will set a new franchise mark.

Selected by the Dodgers in the 14th round of the 2005 draft, Van Slyke hit .251 with 11 home runs, 100 RBIs and 40 doubles in his first four professional seasons (243 games) before this year.

He has played 122 of 130 games in right field, where he has been one of the league’s best outfielders. With 18 outfield assists, he is tied for second among outfielders, one shy of Lake Elsinore’s Danny Payne.

Van Slyke became the first California Leaguer with two five-hit games in one season since Pablo Sandoval in 2007 after recording five-hit games April 25 at Lake Elsinore and May 7 at High Desert.

Alex Liddi of High Desert was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Craig Clark of San Jose was tabbed Pitcher of the Year. San Jose’s Roger Kieshnick earned Rookie of the Year honors and High Desert manager Jim Horner was crowned Manager of the Year.

    SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY NAMED SEVENTH-BEST
    MINOR-LEAGUE SPORTS MARKET

San Bernardino County was named the seventh-best minor-league sports market in the United States, according to rankings issued by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal earlier this week.

The Inland Empire 66ers play home games at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. The 66ers are one of three California League teams, along with a minor-league hockey team that round out the robust minor-league market in San Bernardino County.

The national sports publication ranked 239 markets in several categories, including the number of years their minor-league teams have existed, paid attendance for those teams, fluctuations in each market’s unemployment rate and population, and each area’s total personal income.

According to the report, “Attendance for the area’s three Class A teams is on pace to top 600,000 for the first time since 2005, and the clubs have combined for a 7 percent increase in attendance to date compared with last season.”

The following are the top 10 minor-league sports markets, as ranked by SportsBusiness Journal:

         1. Hershey-Harrisburg, Pa.
         2. Fort Wayne, Ind.
         3. Tulsa, Okla.
         4. Billings, Mont.
         5. Spokane, Wash.
         6. Peoria, Ill.
         7. San Bernardino County, Calif.
         8. Bossier City-Shreveport, La.
         9. Idaho Falls, Idaho
         10. Rochester, N.Y.
