The Delta 4 rocket has accomplished a critical three-peat

“The Delta 4 rocket has accomplished a critical three-peat for the nation in flawless style, successfully capping a series of repetitive but highly important U.S. weather satellite launches with a beautiful blastoff at nightfall Thursday.

“A trio of orbiting observatories, known as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites N, O and P, booked rides aboard Delta 4 rockets to get into orbit and serve meteorologists across America.

“That teaming paid off superbly with three picture-perfect launches in 2006, last June and Thursday evening, deploying a new generation of satellites that will be the mainstay in weather monitoring for many years to come.”

“The Delta’s main engine rumbled to life with the trademark hydrogen fireball harmlessly racing up the rocket, then the pair of solid-fuel boosters strapped to the first stage ignited to propel the 20-story vehicle away from the launch pad at 6:57 p.m. EST (2357 GMT).

“Three systematic firings by the cryogenic upper stage stepped the attached GOES P satellite initially into an initial low-altitude parking orbit, then into an intermediate orbit and finally achieved the desired altitude to deploy the payload.

“The targeted release orbit included a high point of 21,860 statute miles [35,180 km], low point of 4,100 statute miles [6,598 km] and inclination of 12 degrees.

“Satellite-builder Boeing will spend the next three weeks maneuvering the satellite into a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles [35,888 km] over the equator where it can match Earth’s rotation and appear parked in the sky. NASA will take control March 24 to conduct an extensive five-month testing period before the satellite is declared ready for use in NOAA’s weather observing system.

“GOES P is a $500 million mission that won’t immediately go into service. Instead, the craft will become an in-space insurance policy against any potential disruption in weather data from other satellites, just waiting for one of the older craft to finish its usefulness before being activated as a replacement.”

March 4th, 2010

Hello!
This Friday is my big concert with Raul Malo (lead singer of The Mavericks) at the Coach House.  If you would like DISCOUNT TICKETS ($17.50), email me right away!  Details are below.  In case you aren’t familiar with his incredible talent, here is some information and some rave reviews:

Malo is known for his work as the frontman of the Grammy Award-winning, globally platinum- and gold-certified band the Mavericks. Following two albums of covers, Lucky One is Malo’s first album original material in seven years.

Malo has earned much critical respect over the years. USA Today applauded “a voice that seems to have no limits of range or versatility.” The New York Times said, “Malo has an exceptional voice, a burnished tenor that harks back to Roy Orbison and the great Cuban singer Beny Moré.” Rolling Stone added, “Raul Malo has a voice on par with the best of ‘em: Sinatra, George Jones and Orbison.” And The Wall Street Journal opined: “Malo’s superb voice is big and melodic with a natural vibrato. Exquisite.”

“When you see a trio take the to the stage with acoustic guitar, trumpet, and bass guitar, at least it’s going to be an interesting evening. Any doubts were dispelled once Raul Malo started to sing Lucky One, the title track of his first album of original material in seven years. It wasn’t just the sublime voice of the former singer with The Mavericks, but the subtle musical support that he received from his two colleagues. Jamison Sevit’s trumpet was muted so that it added colour without overwhelming the beauty of the song; Jay Weaver’s bass completing a surprisingly robust framework… But what a voice, its range perfectly suited to whatever the style of country, pop or Latin it was deployed on… From the new album, Moonlight Kisses could give Raul Malo another big commercial breakthrough. The Mavericks may be history but their frontman has moved on creatively and with bags of popular appeal and it was thrilling to hear him in such an intimate environment.”

“THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA – Abridged”

March 4th, 2010

From Kellee Flanders, Cal Poly, Pomona:
2/26 – 3/7 “The Complete History of America – Abridged”
The Theatre department presents “THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA – Abridged”
by Adam Long,, Reed Martin & Austin Tichenor on February 26,27 and March 4,5 & 6 at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage Theatre -  Bldg 25.
http://www.class.csupomona.edu/th/shows/

The Complete History of America interprets the past as a breathlessly paced sequence of silly vaudeville sketches, word-association games, puns and crude parodies of movie and television genres. Nothing is sacred, and many of the facts have been a skewed. History has never been this much fun…or as delightfully mutilated!!

Have a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

March 4th, 2010

Dear Denis,

You probably noticed that you are getting this late.  Well, what can I say.  February is always too short of a month.

Since it’s March, I’d like to give tip ‘o the hat to a few people that helped us recently.  First, Vic Besset and all the golfers who braved the rain in Las Vegas to raise money for Steven’s Hope. Once again, we owe a big Irish salute to Mike & Grace Vick for hosting a gathering of our Circle Of Hope Society Members. Also, thanks to the Ontario Reign and the 300+ people who joined us to watch our favorite hockey team win!  And, I can’t forget the dozens of people that have been helping do clothes and toy drives for the Children’s Boutique.

At the bottom of this email is a list of upcoming committee meetings.  I would like you to seriously consider joining one of these committees.  The time commitments will vary so give us a call or send an email to the Committee Chairperson to get details on a specific committee. We are preparing for a very busy 90 days.  We’ve got St. Pat’s, Cool Cruise, and our Golf Tournament coming up.  I’m sure there will be a few surprises along the way.  Wish us luck.

Have a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Tony Cappelli, President

McGrath’s ride or Hearts Up Ranch “Ride Across America”

COUPLE TO RIDE FROM COAST TO COAST ON HORSEBACK TO RAISE AWARENESS AND SUPPORT FOR HEARTS UP RANCH

Hoping To Inspire Others to Follow Their Hearts Couple Will Spend A Year Crossing The Country

Chasing her childhood dream of riding her horse across the country, Jeannette McGrath and husband Richard will follow the American Discovery Trail from Point Reyes National Seashore in California on the Pacific Coast to its end on the Atlantic Coast at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. The route will take them through key historical points including parts of the Pony Express Trail, Dodge City, ghost towns and National Parks. They intend to ride while carrying needed gear on pack horses and camping along the way.

“We will begin our journey in February of 2010 and expect the trail to take us roughly one year to complete”, says Jeannette. “Our goal is to ride an average of 15 to 20 miles per day with regularly planned rest days.” At this speed it will take them approximately 48 to 55 weeks to ride the 5,057 miles of the trail. They will carry a tracking device for safety, and their exact location and progress can be followed online through their website, heartsupranch.com.

During the ride the McGrath’s intend to use several different venues to raise funds and awareness for Hearts Up Ranch.

Hearts Up Ranch will be a safe haven where people can come to find peace, rest, renewed belief, and inspiration. Their mission is to provide a safe and encouraging environment using animals, ranch activities and the love of Christ to promote emotional healing. They hope to bring programs to aid inner city kids, service men and women, people with post traumatic stress, broken and hurting families, rape victims, and “at risk” adjudicated youth.

The couple has high expectations of their upcoming adventure. “We excitedly anticipate meeting many interesting people, especially those whose homes border the trail. We hope to inspire people into accomplishing their own dreams and show that America is still full of good people”, says Richard McGrath. They enlist the help of communities around America to support Hearts Up Ranch, which will better the lives of many hurting people. “This project is a community effort to help others and cannot be done by two people alone.”

Donations to this non-profit cause are gratefully accepted at heartsupranch.com. All contributions are tax deductable.
